Handwriting is still the single biggest source of dispensing error in Bangladesh. Moving to digital prescriptions removes that risk entirely, but only if the prescription is structured well. Here is what a good one contains.
The header carries your authority
Every prescription should print your full name, BDS and any postgraduate qualification, your BMDC registration number, the clinic name, address and phone. Pharmacists check these, and patients keep the sheet for years.
Structure the clinical content
- Chief complaint β in the patient's own words where possible.
- Clinical findings β tooth numbers in FDI notation, not vague descriptions like "upper left back tooth".
- Diagnosis β stated plainly.
- Rx β drug, strength, form, dose, frequency, duration.
- Advice β post-operative care in Bangla, because that is what the patient will read at home.
- Follow-up β an actual date, not "come after one week".
Write the drug line unambiguously
Use the generic name with the brand in brackets. Spell out the duration rather than relying on abbreviations that vary between practitioners. "Amoxicillin 500mg capsule β 1 capsule three times daily after meals for 5 days" leaves nothing to interpretation.
Avoid the abbreviations that cause errors
Write "daily" instead of OD, "units" instead of U, and always put a zero before a decimal point (0.5 ml, never .5 ml). These are the classic sources of tenfold dosing errors.
Record allergies before you prescribe
A patient record that flags a penicillin allergy at the moment of prescribing prevents a category of error that no amount of careful handwriting will catch.
Give advice in Bangla
Post-extraction instructions written in English are frequently not followed. A bilingual template β clinical content in English, patient advice in Bangla β respects both the pharmacist and the patient.
Keep the history retrievable
The real advantage of digital prescribing appears at the second visit, when you can see exactly what you prescribed last time and whether it worked. DentalRx stores every prescription against the patient file, supports reusable Rx templates for your common procedures, prints on your clinic letterhead, and keeps the full history one click away.
